To itemize individual reflection on the field trip,
The warehousing floor layout at ALB is Through -flow. Through flow happens when separate loading bay facilities for outbound and shipping are provided, often at opposite end of a warehouse. It can be environmentally less easy to control, less flexible operationally and in the event of the need for future building expansion.
The height of each warehousing floor of ALB building in Singapore is thirty meters height (ten stories).
At ALB, the powered mobile racking system stored homogenous product and is main storage system. This layout consists of a number of mobile sections working between fixed end racks. This mobile racking system provides good space utilization and random access to every pallet. Mobile racking is expensive though this cost may be offset by a reduced building cost, consequent on the better space utilization. Floor loadings are high, probably requiring reinforcement.
A series of shelves suspended between two continuous chains are driven through supporting sprockets to move the trays up or down as required. Operator access to the carousels can be built to make use of available building height.

Reflection of Educational Field Trip to Army Logistics Base by Saw James Chit Khine

On 24th November 2008 the LOM students had to go to Army Logistics Base (ALB) in order to obverse the real life warehouse processes and distribution industry, to know the different application of the different types of material handling equipment and storage system and to learn how the IT technology is used to enhance the logistics operations performances and production.
First of all, according to the structure of the building, the type of flow that the ALB used is through flow. The building has 30 meter and it is 10 stories tall. The storage system that the ALB use are Bin ASRS for the small items, Pellets ASRS and APIR.
The warehouse use power mobile racking system at the main storage area. The product that are used to store in power mobile racking are the products that do not have high through put level. The purpose of using mobile racking system is to reduce the space utilization of the warehouse. Moreover they use vertical carousel system at medical storage area. At that area there is air conditional to provide the environment that will stretch the life of the products.
The MHEs used at the inbound of ALB are forklift, very narrow aside machine and for outbound they use laser guided vehicle. The type of delivery trucks that are used at ALB are 10 foot container truck.
This educational field trip gives me a lot of knowledge about the warehousing and how they store the products. Moreover, I have seen a lot of IT products that are use in material handling. So, I believe that this will help me to adjust with the environment of warehousing industry quickly when I start working because I have learned the real life of warehousing industry through this trip.

Before we start,first, I would like to introduce about our group.There are three members in our group James,Hilary and Ivan.We all come from Myanmar.The main reason we all choose this course is that it is easier to pass than diploma in business which needs a lot of speaking skill that we are not good at.
Now let start the introduction of individually from me,James,I come to temasek through CIB (Certificate in business) which is sponsored by Gatt company.The reason I choose this course apart from main reason is that one day i want to help my people,the karean,with this course.As I am new to Singapore,I found a lot of difficulties especially food because the tastes are very different from Myanmar.But i believe i can overcome them sooner or later.
My name is LIN THU REIN. I come from Myanmar. Last year I studied certificate in business (CIB) at my country and then I joined Temasek polytechnic. Now I’m studying logistics and operations management (LOM) at TP. The reasons why I choose this course is logistic become important part of every business. I’m also interesting in supply chain, management of inventory and management of the efficient flow and storage of goods from their point of origin to the point of consumption. Another reason is Singapore is a logistic country, so I can get many chance by studying this course.
Now I am Hilary, I also come to Temasek Polytechnic through CIB (Certificate In Business). Honestly I want to be a successful business woman in future life. After that I chose the Logistics and Operation Management, truely I am interested how the operation is running in Logistics company. However, we met a lot of barriers especially the language. Thats why we meet problem in studying but I know I can overcome the problems.
